So the word on the street today is the Facebook “like” may  not be as helpful to businesses as it may seem. People seem to be giving out “like”s more freely,. and with a deteriorating amount of personal and emotional involvement.

Local Businesses seem to have overemphasized the value of the “Like”s as well .. It is still advisable for small businesses to operate a fan page – for the direct line to fans, information sourcing and the “like”.

As for most small businesses using a “local business” page.. i would ask you have a quick look at your fan pages and see “where” your fans are.  A recent study revealed that less than 15% of people who “like” a local business page are actually located locally for that business.. the that means that over 75% of the “like”s that local businesses receive are for “support” rather than happy and/or potential customers.

This isn’t what most local business pages want to hear by any means.

If you one of the millions of brick and mortar businesses that employ a fan page,. this actually may be a bit of a kick in the teeth.

However .. let’s not flog this horse just yet.. Facebook advertising is an amazing tool for local businesses when used in conjunction with a fan page.. we just need to know HOW to use it effectively.

Facebook has announced “Skype” powered video calling integration into the platform.. this could prove to be an invaluable tool for communication to those “Fans”
