New Changes at Google

Google is at it again. On February 27th, the search engine giant announced that no less than 40 changes are going to be implemented in the way it scores and ranks websites. The changes include a Panda update which, according to Google, will refresh “data in the Panda system, making it more accurate and more sensitive to recent changes on the web.”

As everybody in the SEO game knows, changes at Google are nothing new; however, it’s important to keep up with each update in order to adjust SEO efforts accordingly. Among the changes is link evaluation, “We often use characteristics of links to help us figure out the topic of a linked page. We have changed the way in which we evaluate links; …” While some are speculating that this will alter the way Google views anchor texts, no one really knows for certain. It will take some time to assemble trial and error data in order to gauge what it really means.

Another change will affect local search, “We launched a new system to find results from a user’s city more reliably. Now we’re better able to detect when both queries and documents are local to the user.” Again, what that particular quote entails is yet to be deciphered.

As always, changes at Google never come with a blueprint as to how they will affect SEO efforts. One thing is for sure, Google is upping its game once more and as a consequence, SEO pros will need to up theirs as well.
